I've been looking forward to seeing Aaron Sorkin's sophomore directorial effort The Trial Of The Chicago 7  in a theater. Between hearing casting news frequently and Sorkin having to put production on hold for a while, it caused my excitement to increase each day. But thanks to Paramount, I am now going to be sad for the rest of the day after hearing that they have sold the worldwide rights to Netflix.

For those who may not remember, Sorkin's movie will be about the events surrounding the trial of seven political activists who were charged with a conspiracy of starting a riot within the peaceful 1968 Democratic National Convention protests. It has a heck of a cast too, with many actors including Eddie Redmayne (The Aeronauts), Sacha Baron Cohen (Alice Through The Looking Glass), Jeremy Strong (The Gentlemen), Michael Keaton (Dumbo), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman), and Mark Rylance (Dunkirk). Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Snowden) is also in the cast, which has me so excited because it has been too long since I've seen him in a movie.

Paramount was the previous domestic distributor and was going to be released this year. But due to the filmmakers wanting to see the film by the largest audience possible and COVID-19 making theatrical releases tricky, Paramount decided to just sell the project to Netflix for $56 million.

I know that I will get to see this movie regardless since it's now going to Netflix, but it's frustrating that I won't get to see this in theaters. Netflix will show this in a handful of selected theaters so it can qualify for awards contention, but they will not extend it out beyond that. It probably wouldn't have been huge for theaters, but it could've been successful enough for a mid-tier level movie during the awards season.

So after all that waiting, The Trial Of The Chicago 7 will be on Netflix instead of in theaters. Now, I'm going to mope in the corner.
