Cineworld Group has decided to close down its Regal Cinemas in the United States and the United Kingdom starting Thursday. Variety was the first to report them potentially closing.

The company explained in a statement that they could not deliver customers "the breadth of strong commercial films necessary for them to consider coming back to theaters against the backdrop of Covid-19." The decision came after the announcement of No Time To Die being moved back to April 2021 from November 2020. There is also the issue of the second wave of coronavirus affecting the US and the UK.

CEO Mooky Greidinger had this to say in his own statement:

"Cineworld will continue to monitor the situation closely and will communicate any future plans to resume operations in these markets at the appropriate time, when key markets have more concrete guidance on their reopening status and, in turn, studios are able to bring their pipeline of major releases back to the big screen."

Sadly, this decision affects 45,000 employees, who the majority felt blindsided by the decision. According to Variety, the decision came to the Cineworld staff without warning and was already angry about their employer keeping them in the dark about the situation.

Per a statement from a Cineworld employee: “For Mooky to go on television and talk about how we’re all a family? None of us are buying it. If we were a family, we’d be getting information before the press, and our jobs would be guaranteed no matter how long we were closed. Mooky has left the company with no money and we’re the ones paying for his poor judgment.”

Another worker expressed their anger by saying: “Most people were watching the news when they found out, ‘Oh hang on, I’ve lost my job.'”

A 20-year-old staff member aspiring to be a screenwriter, said to Variety: “This job felt like a stepping stone. For someone who loves film and media, it was definitely a nice atmosphere to work in. Now I’m 20 years old, I’ve lost my job and I might have to move home.”
