Disney Makes 2020 Release Calendar Thinner By Postponing Release Dates

Disney has made some more release changes for upcoming big-budget movies, including many Marvel movies and films under 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox). Despite many that got moved, the one that stayed on its date was Pixar's Soul, which is still scheduled for November 20, 2020, after being rumored to be placed on Disney Plus.

Death On The Nile, the sequel to 2017's Murder On The Orient Express, has been taken off its October 23, 2020 release date. It seemed for a while that the murder mystery was going to stick to that date, but sadly, that has changed. It is now scheduled for December 18, 2020, which will be released next to Dune, followed by Wonder Woman 1984.

Speaking of WW84, Disney has decided to remove its upcoming superhero movie Black Widow from its November 6, 2020 release. This doesn't come as much of a surprise, as we have been expecting this to happen ever since WW84 was removed from its October date. This will be the first time an MCU movie hasn't been released in theaters since 2009.

These two changes mean there will be no big releases from now until No Time To Die hits theaters November 20. But perhaps United Artists would be willing to take a chance and leap up to a release date in October and take advantage of the big gap. This is more wishful thinking than anything, but I do see it being a small possibility. Odds are a movie like Greenland, which STX had removed from its September 25 date recently, will reappear and find a spot between now and Thanksgiving.

Disney also changed release dates for their other Marvel movies. Eternals, which stars actors like Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, and Kumail Nanjiani, is now dated for November 5, 2021, after being moved off February 12, 2021. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also moved from May 7, 2021, to July 9, 2021. As you can see, Disney is making sure they continue to lock down their most successful release dates.

Spielberg's remake of West Side Story is being pushed back a year later by releasing on December 10, 2021, instead of December 18, 2020. They are probably hoping it can be a movie for families to gather and watch during the holidays, while also predicting it as an awards contender.

The Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas led thriller Deep Water now be released on August 13, 2021, instead of November 13, 2020.

There are two films in Disney's library that have moved up their release date instead of being pushed back. The first is a horror film called The Empty Man, which got bumped up from December 4, 2020, to October 23, 2020. In my opinion, it appears to be a move by Disney to get rid of this as quickly as possible.

The same cannot be said for their upcoming action film The King's Man, the prequel to the Kingsman franchise. It got moved up from February 26, 2021, to February 12, 2021.

It's frustrating seeing big movies like Black Widow and Death On The Nile being moved off the release calendar at a time where theaters need them most, but it is also a positive sign. None of these projects are being sent to streaming, which was a possibility after Mulan was sent to Disney Plus. This gives me hope that Disney understands the need for films to be in movie theaters, so I'm hoping they learned their lesson from Mulan and will make sure to keep their upcoming films on the release calendar.
