I got to say, I have been skeptical of the Academy making the effort to adjust itself to reflect the current times. My most recent skepticism was believing that the Academy wouldn't vote for Parasite to win Best Picture. To my surprise, they did end up voting for it, causing me to put my foot in my mouth and look closer at their efforts for change.

Since then, I'm becoming more of a believer after seeing the measurements they are taking to be more inclusive. Not too long ago, they announced things such as creating inclusion standards for Oscar eligibility and dialogue panels to discuss topics such as race and diversity in the world and industry. We will still have to see how these ideas play out, but its at least signs of progress.

The most recent efforts happened yesterday when the Academy announced the 819 artists and executives who have been invited to join as voters. The Academy made sure to add more diversity after the #OscarsSoWhite incident years ago, but they seem to be taking that seriously still. According to the Academy, the 2020 class had 45% women, 35% ethnic/racial communities, and 49% international from 68 countries.

Some of its newest members include Parasite actors Choi Woo-Shik, Jang Hye-Jin, Jo Yeo-Jeong, Park So-Dam and Lee Jung-Eun, along with Awkwafina (The Farewell), Zazie Beetz (Joker), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Ana de Armas (Knives Out), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) and Constance Wu (Hustlers). Some of my personal favorite actors also got invited such as Lakeith Stanfield (Knives Out), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), Brian Tyree Henry (If Beale Street Could Talk), and seeing Zack Gottsagen (The Peanut Butter Falcon) get an invite brought a tear to my eye.

Some other names that also caught my eye include filmmakers like Ari Aster (Midsommar), Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse), Alma Har'el (Honey Boy), Matt Reeves (War For The Planet Of The Apes), Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass) and Lulu Wang (The Farewell).

The Academy has been changing for the better, and it has me becoming less skeptical of their efforts as they make more of the right moves. I hope these efforts continue so the Academy Award can become more inclusive for everyone who loves movies.
