TheWrap is reporting that Michael Keaton is in the early stages of talks to return to the role of Batman. If this goes through, his appearance would be for the upcoming Warner Bros. movie The Flash starring Ezra Miller and directed by IT director Andy Muschietti. It is not known how big or small the role will be. Keaton has played Batman/Bruce Wayne in 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns, which were both directed by Tim Burton.

According to TheWrap, the story will have The Flash travel back in time to stop the death of his mother, which results in creating another universe that is protected by Michael Keaton's Batman, who is now 30 years older. No matter how big of a role Keaton will get, it will not affect Matt Reeves' upcoming film The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight.

This report suggests that The Flash will introduce the idea of the multiverse to general audiences, which in comic book terms means an unlimited number of alternate universes that coexist with each other. Many times it has lead to having different versions of the same characters existing and has sometimes lead to them interacting with each other. Though we do not know how this multiverse concept will work out for WB's future DC Comics movies, it could at least give them plenty of options when it comes to developing them.

This may come as a surprise to readers who have seen me fanboy at just about all types of Batman news, but I'm not really keen on this idea. While I understand how creating a "multiverse" could allow WB to allow themselves to develop stand-alone DC movies without worrying about continuity, it doesn't feel necessary to address. We've seen already that their newest methods work for standalone films like Joker, while films like Shazam! and Birds Of Prey could be tied together, but mainly standalone. I think this explanation will just be for DC fans, while general audiences aren't going to worry about it that much.

I also believe that this plot is a bit too big for the Flash's first movie. I wouldn't mind seeing Miller's version of the Flash have a story on a smaller scale before taking big leaps like introducing a "multiverse." This is especially due to not getting to know him in 2017's Justice League. Maybe his introduction in that movie won't matter for his character moving forward, but as of now, that's all I got as a reference point.

I also simply do not need Michael Keaton returning as Batman. Will it be a fun Easter egg or possibly an amazing return to one of Keaton's famous roles? It's absolutely possible. But it doesn't feel like a big "need" and is more of a "wouldn't that be awesome?" idea. Plus, I don't need every DC movie - past, present, or future - to be "connected." I don't mind having Tim Burton's Batman world be in its own separate bubble while The Flash and future DC movies are in another.

I guess this could be one step closer for DC fans to get a live-action Batman Beyond movie, so at least that possibility is becoming more realistic.
