California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced last Friday that film and television shoots resume their productions starting June 12th. This bit of news comes after the industry had to shut down productions due to the coronavirus outbreak in the United States for about three months.

Due to the virus still being a problem, studios will have to follow production guidelines to not increase the amount of COVID cases. The California Department of Public Health explains in their statement that: “To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew, and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers.”

The guidelines moving forward will focus on hygiene and sanitation on film sets. The sets will also have individually packaged meals instead of buffet tables, and allow live audiences only when they wear masks and maintain a safe distance. Coronavirus testing for the cast and crew will be mandatory, which includes temperature screenings and supplying personal protective equipment.

Some of their other recommendations include making departments smaller and using remote-monitoring technology to reduce the amount of people on set. Hair and makeup artists are asked to not spend long periods of time in direct contact with performers while also providing protective equipment and proper hygiene. Auditions will be done virtually if possible, although if they have to be done in person without a mask, then plexiglass or other barriers will be put between the casting crew and the actors.

While this is a positive sign of the entertainment industry revving up to go back to business as usual, it will have plenty of hiccups to overcome with all of these protocols. I look forward to seeing more movies being completed for theaters reopening to show, but I hope that it can be done as safely as possible.
