What better way to celebrate Star Wars day than announce who is helming a new, upcoming Star Wars movie, right? Well, maybe for some of us.

While there are plenty of us who love Star Wars, there are sure to be others who have gotten Star Wars fatigue thanks to the mixed results that surrounded the newest trilogy of the Skywalker saga. Whether the fatigue is real or not, it sure will not stop Disney from releasing more Star Wars in the coming years.

To keep cranking out Star Wars, Disney has hired one of their favorite writers/directors, Taika Waititi. To put it simply, this decision makes sense business-wise.

You've seen this guy reinvigorate your superhero character Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, seen him successfully contribute to Disney+ with The Mandalorian (a Star Wars TV Show), and have witnessed him win an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit. It would be unwise to let this guy walk away from your studio, so offering him a Star Wars movie keeps him around and gets fans of Marvel and Star Wars excited.

There's no shooting schedule announced, but my bet is he works on the new Star Wars project after he finishes Thor: Love and Thunder. Krysty Wilson-Cairns will be his co-writing partner, who is most recently known for her work on 1917. There is no release date, or any other details about the project yet.

My only question is not what direction will Waititi take Star Wars in (I'm sure it will be awesome), but rather what becomes of his adaptation of Akira with Warner Bros. It wouldn't shock me if Waititi may have to walk away from it altogether. Warner Bros. was reportedly waiting for him to finish Thor: Love and Thunder so he can do Akira next, but I'd be shocked if they waited on him while he does Thor and Star Wars back to back.

I've never lost faith in Waititi since watching Hunt For The Wilderpeople, and have had no reason to since. I trust him as a creator to come up with something fresh for the future of Star Wars movies that could make the franchise feel special again. I think we can all agree Star Wars needs someone like Waititi to make that happen.
